Steven Soderbergh plotting a movie on Panama Papers scandal

The renowned American director Steven Soderbergh is all set to produce a film centred on the Panama Papers. He may even direct it.

The movie will be based on an upcoming book, The Secrecy World, written by Jake Bernstein -- who was a senior reporter on the team which broke the scandal story. The book is expected to hit the stands in the fall of 2017.

The Panama Papers emerged after a year long investigation by an international consortium of journalists -- which included a few from The Indian Express. It was found that the world’s rich and famous had been parking their wealth in Panama in order to avoid paying taxes in their respective countries. Several Indian names featured in the list that was compiled from 11 million documents, which belonged to a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca.

Soderbergh is now filming a heist movie called, Logan Lucky with Daniel Craig ( famous for his James Bond adventures), Channing Tatum and Hilary Swank.

Soderbergh also helmed Behind the Candelabra, a moving character study of the pianist, Liberace. But Soderbergh is better known for works like Erin Brockovich (in which Julia Roberts plays the title character taking on a huge electric corporation), Traffic (about the illegal drug trade in Mexico), The Girlfriend Experience (in 2009, which had the then pornographic actress, Sasha Grey) and the Ocean’s series.

With Sex, Lies and Videotape, he became the youngest director, at 26 years old, to have won Cannes’ most renowned award.

And what is more, when Sex, Lies and Videotape was screened at the International Film Festival of India in 1991 at Calcutta -- which was the 12-day gypsy event’s halt that year -- it caused a stampede outside the theatre. The police had to resort to a mild baton charge to get the crowds under control.

Obviously, the movie’s title, Sex, Lies and Videotape, had got the people all excited, and they were seen rushing to somehow get inside the auditorium. The result was utter chaos.
